Pellet strength: crushing and attrition

Why “check the strength” is not a complete testing task and what information helps select a suitable entry.

Identify the mechanical characteristic

The REOCAT source catalogue includes static pellet strength, mechanical crushing strength and abrasion resistance. These entries have different names, objects and documents. The common word “strength” does not make them interchangeable.

Quote the exact specification or task requirement and attach the document. This helps avoid selecting a similarly named entry with a different scope.

Two examples from standards descriptions

ASTM D4179-01 describes resistance of formed particles to compressive force and restricts applicable shapes. ASTM D4058-25 addresses attrition and abrasion of catalysts and carriers. They describe different tasks.

These external references explain terminology. They do not add services to the REOCAT catalogue or establish applicability of those editions to your sample.

Describe the particles

  • Material and form: tablets, spheres, extrudates or another documented shape.
  • Specified dimensions, if known, and whether the sample contains whole particles, fragments or a mixture.
  • Sample condition and origin, with identifiers for comparison batches.
  • The parameter, reference document and requirement to be assessed.

Agree on the deliverable

Confirm the parameter name and how it will be reported before testing. For comparison with earlier data, attach a report describing the method rather than an isolated final number.

A programme may contain several catalogue entries, but each must be checked for applicability. The laboratory will agree on sample quantity and preparation before shipment.

If the parameter has not been selected

Describe the situation and decision: batch inspection, material comparison or checking a supplier requirement. Do not assign a method from a particle photograph without agreement.

Price and timing follow the programme. This article does not establish one universal value for every particle form and strength test.

Sources and scope

These sources explain technical concepts. Document applicability and the test scope are confirmed when agreeing on a request.
